{Book Tour} The Harvesting (The Harvesting Series Book 1) by Melanie Karsak

You‘re Undead. Now What?
By Melanie Karsak

You were bit by a zombie. That sucks. No, wait, that would be vampires . . . instead, that bites. You were lucky enough not to be eaten alive but not lucky enough to avoid being bitten. Bad luck, friend. Now you have nasty zombie-goo pumping through your veins, and you are about to turn you into a reanimated corpse. What’s a girl to do? In this guide, I offer some suggestion on how to handle your metamorphosis from living to undead both pre-and post-mortem.
In the short few hours before you turn into a zombie. What should you be doing? Here are a few suggestions:
  • Pass off all your ammo to your group or leave it where it can be easily found if you are a solitary. Give someone a chance even if you are doomed.
  • Pass of any supplies you might be carrying. Don’t give away your canteen, the survivors still probably don’t know how the disease is being spread, but feel free to pass along matches, batteries, walk-talkies, or other useful items.
  • Tell everyone you love how much you love them and why. This will motivate them to survive the apocalypse.
  • Tell everyone you hate how much you hate them and why. A good catharsis never hurt anyone.
  • Reassure your child, lover, sister, or friend that it is perfectly fine for them to blow your brains out. You would do the same for them.
  • Try to enjoy a last meal. Pretty soon, you’ll be dining on human flesh. If you can, try to have one slice piece of pizza.
  • If you can stomach it, make your peace then check out. Morbid, yes, but don’t make someone you love kill you.
Now, let’s say you have turned zombie without the benefit of being in a group. Now what? Here are a few options you might explore:
  • Discover if you are a fast or slow zombie. Try sprinting 28 Days Later style. No luck? Well, odds were against you anyway. Instead, try perfecting the zombie shuffle.
  • Go exploring! Haven’t you always wanted to see the inside of your dream house? The girl’s locker room? Somewhere? Now is your chance. Do watch out for the living; they will shoot you dead.
  • Turn others into zombies but don’t eat them. This will take self-control, but no one wants to shuffle around without their bff. Imagine how much fun you could have together. Since you won’t be running from the undead, you’ll be free to enjoy your down-time.
  • Jump off things. Buildings. Cliffs. From windows. You won’t die, so why not do a little thrill seeking?
Becoming a zombie is unfortunate, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still have fun. Learning to look at the bright side and embrace your zombie uniqueness will really enhance your experience of being one of the living dead. After all, it’s all fun and games until someone ends up undead!
Thanks so much for having me!

{Book Review} The Harvesting (The Harvesting) by Melanie Karsak

The Harvesting (The Harvesting)
by Melanie Karsak
Released: September 18th 2012
Genre:Fiction- Adult: Horror, Zombie
How I got it: Received a copy from the author

It's all fun and games until someone ends up undead.

Though Layla reluctantly returns home to rural Hamletville after a desperate call from her psychic grandmother, she could never have anticipated the horror of what Grandma Petrovich has foreseen. The residents of Hamletville will need Layla's help if they are to survive the zombie apocalypse that's upon them. But that is not the only problem. With mankind silenced, it soon becomes apparent that we were never alone. As the beings living on the fringe seek to reclaim power, Layla must find a way to protect the ones she loves or all humanity may be lost.

Review: Not what I expected. The Harvesting is a unique take on the apocalypse. At the request of her grandmother Layla returns to her hometown. Always a bit eccentric grandma has taken it to a whole new level, turning her cottage into a bunker. She does her best to prepare Layla for what will happen. Awakening after drinking some weird mushroom tea, Layla is force to deal with a new world where the dead have come back to life.
Taking weapons from her grandmother's stock pile Layla swoops in, to save what is left of the town folk and comes face to face with her painful past.
There are a lot of facets to this story, not only is there the survival and zombie aspect but also a bit of a romance. Layla must deal with a new burden of leadership, developing feelings for Jamie, and old feelings for Ian. Not to mention a new awareness, brought on by her grandmas tea.
All this moved the plot along pulling me deeper into the book. Just when I thought I had everything figured out, Ms Karsak throws in a curve ball. Introducing a whole new element, the vampires. I thought the twists to the creatures was interesting as was the metaphysical element.
Over all this was an enthralling book and I loved the teaser at the end for book two. Which I will be awaiting.

I wants it...

I knew it would be a tease when I saw it. I told myself don't do it, it'll just get you excited then stop. But I couldn't resist. That hypnotic cover, the promise of just a little more... So I do'd it. Yes I requested Unhinged Chapter Sampler from Netgalley. I'm so weak... But look at this cover and tell me you wouldn't, especially those of you who've read Splintered.

Isn't it cool! After reading chapter one, I'm hooked. If I could pre-order this now I would. Instead I will be pre-ordering as a Christmas present in Dec since it's slated to come out in Jan 2014. Splintered is one of my favorites for 2013, it is hands down the best Alice in Wonderland adaptation I've read. I'm an Alice Junkie so I've read a lot of re-tellings and revamps of the story. The dark and twisted world Ms Howard created based on Mr Carroll's world is just amazing. I have to admit my review doesn't do it justice.
I was swept into Alyssa's Wonderland, when reading Splintered I didn't want it to end. I was overjoyed when I discovered there would be a sequel. I think Ms Howard is an author to keep an eye on, she has talent. Reading the sampler of Unhinged just reenforced my opinion and added to my anticipation.

{Book Review} World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War
by Max Brooks
Publisher: Crown
Released: September 12th 2006
Genre: Fiction_ Adult: Post-Apocalyptic, horror, zombie
How I got it: Bought

The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the testimony of men, women, and sometimes children who came face-to-face with the living, or at least the undead, hell of that dreadful time. World War Z is the result. Never before have we had access to a document that so powerfully conveys the depth of fear and horror, and also the ineradicable spirit of resistance, that gripped human society through the plague years.

Ranging from the now infamous village of New Dachang in the United Federation of China, where the epidemiological trail began with the twelve-year-old Patient Zero, to the unnamed northern forests where untold numbers sought a terrible and temporary refuge in the cold, to the United States of Southern Africa, where the Redeker Plan provided hope for humanity at an unspeakable price, to the west-of-the-Rockies redoubt where the North American tide finally started to turn, this invaluable chronicle reflects the full scope and duration of the Zombie War.

Most of all, the book captures with haunting immediacy the human dimension of this epochal event. Facing the often raw and vivid nature of these personal accounts requires a degree of courage on the part of the reader, but the effort is invaluable because, as Mr. Brooks says in his introduction, “By excluding the human factor, aren’t we risking the kind of personal detachment from history that may, heaven forbid, lead us one day to repeat it? And in the end, isn’t the human factor the only true difference between us and the enemy we now refer to as ‘the living dead’?”

Note: Some of the numerical and factual material contained in this edition was previously published under the auspices of the United Nations Postwar Commission.

Review: I flip flopped on buying this book for a while, then bought it because it was on sale at Target.
World War Z was not what I expected, it was more a collection of short stories. Each chapter is a different persons tale of what happened during the zombie war. The stories were intense. For me they read just like real tales of war, violent, gruesome and highly emotional. Mr Brooks' world building was amazing, he created, or perhaps rebuilt a world, after a global catastrophe. The stories span from China to the US and many countries in between. Each was about the terrifying ordeal of the dead returning to feast on the living. Some stories were military and some from citizens, yet all were riveting.
I liked the wide range of tales given not only views from the army facing down the enemies, but also how Joe Shmoe dealt with their loved ones coming back. I found one of the last stories to be the most facinating. I takes place in the ocean where the zombies are still trudging across the bottom and the interviewer is in the sub and sees what the undersea workers are dealing with. I thought that was really cool.
I do need to say, while I really enjoyed the book I don't think it was worth all the hype. It is kind of original in it's delivery, but not so much the zombie "genre".

{Book Tour} The Legend of Harper and the Reversing Worlds (The Reversing Worlds Trilogy) by J.T. Brown

The Reversing Worlds Trilogy, holds a special treasure within the stories. It is based on an actually place in Downeast, Maine. I recognized this phenomenon when I was a child, lobster/crap fishing with my father. Although, Reversing Falls leaves many people wondering what causes the small whirlpools and the rough terrain. It is a dangerous place that most avoid, but for the Maine fishermen this is a place where they can’t avoid, it is a passage through to greater waters. The creation of Reversing Worlds was actually created years ago, it just took a while to catch up to me. I remember as a child, holding tight to the stern as the boat shifted through the water tornadoes, pushing us side to side, as we made our way through. I remember looking over the side wondering and wanting to tell my tale of the reversing ocean’s tide. Most people see the long and uneasy tides as part of the ocean. I could see a mystery, a forbidden place that reverses all roles and leaves a tale to be told, maybe in a paranormal fantasy sense. But – All in all, it is Harper’s legends of the Reversing Worlds.

Sometimes stories do not leave your soul until you are able to bleed your thoughts on paper. The Reversing Worlds Trilogy has been a huge learning curve for me, and it has taken me a while to catch up to the ideas of being self-published. It has been many times that I wanted to give up, but knowing that self-discovery is the key to your soul. It is important to chase something that follows you everywhere you go. I never thought of myself as a writer, until I realized that there is so many untold stories in my mind. Writing is a piece of me that I can ignore, but why? – Every tale should be told. Right?

I am fortunate, I live near the ocean, where all my writing are inspired from. I look at Maine as though it is my paint palette, I strike my brush in the needed colors and paint my latest visions. I am a huge outdoor person, a simple walk can create the most fascinating terrifying character through the lands of Pasmaqon. I think this is the same for a lot of writers, it is seeing an inspiration and running with it.

Pasmaqon, is a hidden land that was created from a magical book, which Caroleen found as a child over a hundred years ago. She disappeared from this world, and everyone around her thought that she had expired in the river connected to the ocean. When Harper was scrounging through old antiques in her mother’s hope chest, she found the book, and forced the clasp open. What Harper did not expect is to find herself in a world of wonder and magic.

The darkness of Pasmaqon learns of her presence and know that she has traveled through the only portal. The darkness aware of the book and in hopes that it is once again in Pasmaqon. She found herself not only adjusting to the magical lands, but learning her own power keeping her safe from the darkness that lurks around every corner hot on her keeps. The darkness is the lost souls struggling to conquer Pasmaqon. The dark creature’s holds a cover of invisible vises, and sometimes their ghost figure can hold the image of a wolf. Both are powerful, the only problem is, they cannot be vanished, they are already dead.

Harper battles the invisible vices to protect Pasmaqon, as she battles a never ending battle of the dead. The secrets of the lands are exposed, but is it enough for Harper and her friends to find freedom. Maybe they are prisoners of the land, like all of the other lost souls? Maybe they are more powerful then they think? Maybe there is a reason they are there together? Maybe it is already rehearsed in the book? Who Knows?

You will find out at the end of June, 2013.

To learn more about Pasmaqon’s characters, take a peek at this video.

Also, War of the Reversing Worlds, Trilogy Two, Part II’s book Trailer:

As well, as footage of the Reversing Falls, Pembroke, Maine:

I visit this place often, just because the ocean heals my soul, and my thoughts are at their peak, when I sit there and watch the reversing motions of the falls. Here is some footage –

Do you remember Queen Caroleen’s families Inn. Where she grew up and where she wrote in all of the journals. This is an actual place as well. It sets off from the Denny’s River, in Dennysville, Maine. This big old house always brought me to the thoughts of Queen Caroleen. Only to find out after I wrote “The legend of Harper and the Reversing Worlds, Trilogy One,” that a young girl back in the 1800’s actually fell through the ice here near this house. She was never found, and legends say that her spirit still combs the shores where the river meets the ocean. Kind of a surreal moment, to think that you have written something that has actually happened a hundred years ago.

When you look in the picture, you can see the large rocks near the river’s side – this is where I always pictured Caroleen writing in her many journals and books.

It's Monday!!!

Not much going on, as the days get nicer I've noticed my reading has slowed down. Just one book read this week, but I did schedule a few reviews. Saturday a friend and I took the kids to the playground, my face looks like a tomato it's so red. Of course I sun screened everyone but me. Hubby went fishing with his buddies came back sunburned as well.
I'm a little excited this is my daughters last week of school. After Thursday I don't have to get up early any more. I totally will, for the quiet time but I don't have to.

Welcome to It’s Monday! What Are You Reading!
Hosted by Sheila @ Book Journey

Currently Reading...

Ghostly Summons by John A. Karr (Reading for a book tour in July, not what I expected.)
Lars Kelsen doesn’t believe in psychic phenomenon. To him, visions of murder victims are a form of mental illness. Once they begin, options are limited; he can try to ignore them or deal with them by exposing a killer. Only the latter provides any semblance of peace. Temporarily, anyway. Five years into his new life as a programmer, Kelsen—ex-crime beat reporter with a penance he can never fully satisfy—sees a victim.
In person. Upright. Staring.
Typical of such past "Visits" as he calls them, he doesn’t welcome this one. The nude form of a beautiful millionairess in his cubicle means murder has come to the vacation haven known as North Carolina’s Outer Banks. It means he’ll have to go places he'd rather avoid. See things he'll wish he hadn’t. Do things that don't come naturally, like in-your-face confrontation and bending the law. Actually, breaking the law ... but with good intent. It also means dealing with one very attractive county coroner, who pushes his buttons in a not entirely unwelcome way.
So begins Kelsen's return to investigative reporting—complete with attempts on his life, fights, deception, and all the technological tricks, such as GPS and computer hacking, at his disposal. And maybe even finding a new love interest.

Plague Town (Ashley Parker #1) by Dana Fredsti (Will have this finished this week.)
Ashley was just trying to get through a tough day when the world turned upside down. A terrifying virus appears, quickly becoming a pandemic that leaves its victims, not dead, but far worse. Attacked by zombies, Ashley discovers that she is a 'Wild-Card' -- immune to the virus -- and she is recruited to fight back and try to control the outbreak. It's Buffy meets the Walking Dead in a rapid-fire zombie adventure!

Soul Screamers Volume One (Soul Screamers 0.5, 1, 2)by Rachel Vincent (Slow going as kids steal my kindle and I'm focusing on review books too.)
It starts with a scream….
New York Times bestselling author Rachel Vincent's compelling Soul Screamers series keeps getting better—here, for the first time, the original stories are compiled into one special volume….
My Soul to Lose
—The prequel: never before in print!—
Kaylee is just your average girl shopping at the mall with friends—until a terrified scream bursts from her that cannot be stopped. Taken to a hospital ward, will she be able to save her mind—and her life?
My Soul to Take
She's always felt different, but now Kaylee discovers why. The screams that cannot be denied mean that someone near her will die—and she can never save them. Because saving one life means taking another….
My Soul to Save
Going on dates with her boyfriend is still new to Kaylee. But when the singer of the band they're seeing dies onstage and Kaylee doesn't scream, she knows something crazy is going on. Soon she discovers souls can indeed be sold….

Breaking Bad (Midnight Justice #3 by Jodi Redford (Just started reading for DDR)
No super deed goes unpunished…

A Midnight Justice story.

It’s been twenty-five years since the last Light Guardian was wiped out. Or so it’s believed. Ruby Winston is about to blow the lid off that theory, even though it’ll bring every Shadow Czar minion down on her ass.

She’s always known she was different from the rest of the evil-dictators-in-training Winstons. Uncovering the secret half of her gene pool proves it. Now she’s out to bring down her late father’s mind-control soda empire—and break the Shadow Czars’ hold on Earth.

Problem is, becoming a superhero overnight isn’t as easy as it looks.

Teague Younger has his own secrets to keep: his heritage, and his fierce determination to exact revenge on his friend and mentor’s murderer. So far he’s kept his cover—until he’s forced to use his Light Guardian powers to save Ruby from a sticky situation.

Thrust together and on the run, Teague and Ruby form a wary alliance as they desperately fight their circuit-blowing attraction. With an army of Shadow Queen minions hot on their tails, they might have a hard time surviving the night, much less ignoring their hearts.

Product Warnings
This book contains mind-controlling beverages, evil dictators and minions, excessive use of spandex, and enough electrifying sex to melt an ice train.

{Book Tour} UnBeautifully by Madeline Sheejan

 UnBeautifully by Madeline Sheejan
Warning: This is not a story about fate or destiny. This is a story about pain, sorrow, and suffering. This is an impulsive whirlwind romance between two lovers that are not meant to be together. Theirs is not a world with sunshine and roses. Instead, their love blossoms in a secret world full of crime, violence, and death. Their story is about what can be born from nightmares.

Danielle “Danny” West is the daughter of Deuce West, President of the Hell’s Horsemen Motorcycle Club. A sweet and beautiful girl, she loses her way, searching for things that are always out of her reach. Erik “Ripper” Jacobs is the Sergeant of Arms in the Hell’s Horsemen. Once a man who always had a smile on his face, his life takes a turn for the worst when a tragedy befalls him, leaving him scarred and broken. During a midsummer night, Danny and Ripper’s paths cross, forever changing their lives. Hastily, their lust turns to love until another tragedy forces them apart. On a journey that is marred with ugliness and chaos, Danny and Ripper must discover if their unforeseen connection can find the beauty in their world.

This is Danny and Ripper’s story.

Everything has beauty. Even the ugly. Especially the ugly.
Because without ugly, there would be no beauty.

EXCERPT:
The first time I fell in love it was with a pair of blue eyes and a wide dimpled grin.

“Your old man loves ya, Danny girl,” He whispered. “You never ever forget that, yeah?”

I never did. And I never thought I could ever love any man as much as I loved my father. But as we grow, we change, we begin to make our own decisions and thus become independent and self sufficient and start turning away from our parents and turning to others. We form friendships, strong bonds and ties and begin experiencing life outside of the bubble we grew up inside of.
And we fall in love…a second time.

The second time I fell in love it was with a badly scarred face, the stuff of nightmares; the sort of disfigurement that mothers steer their children away from. Ugly, jagged slashes marred the skin from the top of his skull, down over his right eye, an eye that had been dug out of his face with a serrated blade. The scars continued across his cheek, over his lips and down his neck, ending at the top of his shoulder. His chest was a hundred times worse; scar tissue as far as the eye could see.

“Baby,” He said gruffly, “Man like me got no business with a girl like you. You’re nothin’ but fuckin’ beauty and I’m a whole lot of fuckin’ ugly who’s already halfway to hell.”

But he was wrong.

Everything has beauty. Even the ugly. Especially the ugly.

Because without ugly there would be no beauty.

Because without beauty we would not survive our pain, our sorrow, and our suffering.

And in the world I lived in, the world he lived in, a secret world within the world, a world of of constant crime and cruel, cold, death, there was almost nothing but suffering.

“You may not be beautiful the way you were before,” I whispered, placing my hand on his hard chest. “But you’re still beautiful. To me.
